Free Trees are only available to Provo Residential Customers that live in a single-family home and have an electric utility account. Trees are limited to one (1) tree per every third year.

NatureShade offers qualifying residents in Provo the opportunity to receive a free shade tree to plant near their homes. Embrace the power of nature to reduce energy costs, enhance air quality, and beautify your surroundings.

About the NatureShade Program

Provided by Provo City Power, NatureShade allows eligible residential utility customers that live in a single-family home to apply for a free shade tree. When planted properly, these trees can significantly reduce energy costs by providing natural cooling and sequestering carbon emissions.

Trees selected for the Fall 2026 giveaway are below. All tree species are selected for their growth rate, shade benefits, and because they grow well in Utah’s environment. Please note that we rely on a local nursery for the trees, and although we do our best to provide an accurate list, the specific tree species and availability of each are not guaranteed during the giveaway.

Hot Wings Tatarian Maple

  • Height: 20 ft
  • Width: 24 ft
  • Growth Rate: Moderate Growing

More About This Tree

The Hot Wings Tatarian Maple tree has showy red samaras (winged seeds) that shine in bright contrast to the summer foliage of this small tree that and is an excellent performer in rugged climates. Broadly oval when young, its branches spread wider than tall, becoming rounded at maturity.

Advantages:

Fall Color and White flowers in May. Drought tolerant, disease resistant. Cons: can be messy, grows slower than others

Princeton Elm

  • Height: 65 ft
  • Width: 50 ft
  • Growth Rate: Fast Growing

More About This Tree

Introduced in 1922 by Princeton Nurseries of New Jersey, the Princeton Elm has proven for more than a century to be tolerant of Dutch elm disease. Dark green foliage and upright, symmetrical form. Recommended for street tree plantings.

Advantages:

Drought tolerant, works well with Utah soils, Salt tolerant  Cons: Pruning after maturity

Red Oak

  • Height: 50 ft
  • Width: 45 ft
  • Growth Rate: Moderate Growing

Red Oak is a large, broad headed tree. The large leaves turn from a rich green to deep red in the fall.

Advantages:

Beautiful deep red fall color, strong branching structure, adaptable to many soil types, and is drought tolerant. Cons: Grows and drops acorns
